Aims and scope

International Journal of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (IJCIM) reports new research in theory and applications of computer integrated manufacturing. The scope spans mechanical and manufacturing engineering, software and computer engineering as well as automation and control engineering with a particular focus on today’s data driven manufacturing. Terms such as industry 4.0, intelligent manufacturing, digital manufacturing and cyber-physical manufacturing systems are now used to identify the area of knowledge that IJCIM has supported and shaped in its history of more than 30 years.

IJCIM continues to grow and has become a key forum for academics and industrial researchers to exchange information and ideas. In response to this interest, IJCIM is now published monthly, enabling the editors to target topical special issues; topics as diverse as digital twins, transdisciplinary engineering, cloud manufacturing, deep learning for manufacturing, service-oriented architectures, dematerialized manufacturing systems, wireless manufacturing and digital enterprise technologies to name a few.

The journal is intended for senior managers and researchers in manufacturing engineering management, industrial engineering, computer science, and systems integration as well as mechanical engineers, automation & control engineers and software engineers intending to benefit from the increasingly connected manufacturing environments.

All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the Senior Editor, and, if suitable, peer reviewed by independent, anonymous expert referees through an international Editorial team and Editor in Chief. All peer reviews are double anonymized with submission online via ScholarOne.

Special Issue on Manufacturing system design towards Industry 5.0
Submission Date: 2024-12-31

Guest Editors Qiang Liu, Guangdong University of Technology, China Dimitris Mourtzis, University of Patras, Greece Ang Liu, University of New South Wales, Australia Xi Gu, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA Jiewu Leng, Guangdong University of Technology, China Ray Y. Zhong, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR Introduction Manufacturing system design (MSD) plays a key role in improving product quality, production efficiency, and system sustainability. The individualized requirements for MSD are interconnected and coupled with each other, while the optimization process requires coordination among various system key performance metrics (Mourtzis, 2020; Gu et al., 2015). New requirements for MSD have to be taken into consideration and MSD has revealed new features. The manufacturing system in the era of Industry 5.0 has to be human-centric, adaptive, resilient, and flexible enough to allow multiple variations for new product offerings imposed by the volatile market demand (Peruzzini et al., 2023; Leng et al., 2023; Nassehi et al., 2022). The responsiveness, cost efficiency, high reliability, scalability, and the ability for easy software/hardware (re)configuration are inherent to Manufacturing System 5.0. It requires the system designer to have a comprehensive understanding of both the manufacturing process and the manufacturing execution engine. Advances in MSD include the establishment of new design models/methods, proposing new design schemes, and utilizing new design techniques/enablers. The automation of design knowledge and the rapid optimization of coupled multi-discrete problems are critical in MSD (Leng et al., 2023; Jiang et al., 2018; Järvenpää et al., 2023). While new-generation artificial intelligence technologies have demonstrated promising results, there are still challenges for MSD towards Industry 5.0 (Wang et al., 2022). The European Commission in the framework of the Digital transition introduced Industry 5.0 to foster a sustainable, human-centric, and resilient industry within Europe in 2021. When the technology-driven Industry 4.0 paradigm is still in full swing, some studies have been conducted on MSD towards the realization of main visions in Industry 5.0. Furthermore, a significant disparity persists between individualized requirements and the actual MSD outcomes. To promote the transition from a technology-driven initiative in Industry 4.0 to the coexistence and interaction of Industry 4.0 and a value-oriented business model in Industry 5.0, this Special Issue is to present state-of-the-art research on MSD, demonstrate the benefits of reorganizing technologies in MSD, and anticipate the potential challenges. We invite submissions that present original and high-quality research and review work on MSD towards Industry 5.0. We consider submissions that introduce new design thinking/concepts, develop novel MSD methodologies, present innovative MSD applications, and investigate challenges and opportunities towards this transition Successful real-world MSDs are strongly encouraged. Scope Original, high quality theoretical and empirical research papers are invited for submissions in this special issue. Typical topics include, but not limited to, following topics: Computational MSD Cross-dimensional MSD (function, structure, behavior, control, intelligence, performance) Design of human-centric smart manufacturing systems Design of resilient manufacturing systems Frameworks, reference architectures, and models of MSD towards Industry 5.0 Human-centric and resilience-oriented MSD Innovative MSD thinking, concepts, theory, and methodologies Integrated design of product and manufacturing systems Large language model-based generative MSD MSD for enhanced system sustainability MSD in product lifecycle management context MSD under mass individualization paradigm New MSD algorithms, applications, and cases New MSD models and methods Reorganizing of enablers (e.g., industrial artificial intelligence, blockchain, digital twin, cognitive computing, and knowledge graph) for MSD Variant design of manufacturing systems All submissions will be judged for their appropriateness to the journal’s remit and the novelty of their theoretical and practical research contributions. While quantitative research is preferred, relevant qualitative research studies as well as case studies are also welcomed. Timeline Manuscript submission: December 31, 2024 Reviewer reports: February 28, 2025 Revised paper submission: April 30, 2025 Final manuscript submissions: June 30, 2025 Approximate publication date: July 31, 2025 Submission Guidelines To prepare the manuscripts, authors should follow the “Instructions for authors” presented at the journal website. Submission can be made via the journal homepage using the T&F Submission Portal.
