Special Issue on Current and Future Trends in Big Data-based Smart Mobility
Submission Date: 2025-02-28

Big data and related technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and more, are important drivers of so-called smart mobility. This concept refers to “local and supra-local accessibility, availability of ICTs, modern, sustainable and safe transport systems” (Vanolo, 2014). Smart mobility is about, for instance, electric mobility, intelligent traffic management, payments, driving, shared vehicles, sustainability, and intelligent transportation (Faria et al., 2017). Moreover, mobility is a crucial element of competitiveness and innovation for urban contexts and also many manufacturing and service industries, such as healthcare, sea-land logistics, catering and more. Big data are an essential source of competitive advantage for all the public and private stakeholders interested in (and operating in) the mobility sector. For instance, big data are essential for the development, design and well-working of digital products, architectures and processes to enhance monitoring and predictive maintenance, reducing operating costs and negative externalities, and increasing the safety level of the whole mobility system. In order words, big data and its proper management are the core elements for making the mobility system greener and, in general, promoting an innovative "sustainability-led mobility" framework across industries and societies. To this end, big data research urgently should provide new evidence and frameworks for supporting, via new digital technologies, citizens, firms and institutions all around the world in the design/management/exploitation of smart mobility solutions. This special issue of “Big Data Research” aims to shed light, from a variety of disciplinary fields, on the present and future of smart mobility and the role of big data and digital transformation to increase the performance, effectiveness, management and sustainability in the mobility sector and create value for its stakeholders.
