Special Issue on Building Tomorrow: Transforming Structural Engineering with AI and Sustainable Practices
截稿日期: 2026-05-01

The future of structural engineering is here—and it is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting the transformative potential of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) techniques in shaping the design and construction of tomorrow’s buildings. These transformative technologies are redefining how we design, analyze, and construct the built environment, enabling smarter, safer, and more sustainable structures. Recent advances in computational power, algorithmic development, and data availability have fueled a new wave of innovation in structural engineering. AI-driven methods are unlocking unprecedented opportunities in performance optimization, material efficiency, safety enhancement, and life-cycle sustainability. As AI libraries, simulation tools, and open datasets continue to expand, the integration of intelligent technologies is reshaping not only how we build, but how we envision the future of construction—adaptive, data-informed, and environmentally responsible. This Special Issue, “Building Tomorrow: Transforming Structural Engineering with AI and Sustainable Practices”, aims to showcase the latest research and developments that merge AI with sustainability principles to address complex structural challenges in the field of building design and construction. We invite original contributions exploring computational frameworks, predictive models, and AI-powered optimization strategies that embed environmental and socio-economic performance indicators into intelligent design processes. Of particular interest are studies that apply advanced AI methods—such as refined Deep and Machine Learning techniques, Data-driven generative design and AI-powered optimization algorithms—aiming to promote the creation of resilient and low-carbon buildings through multi-criteria decision-making processes. The Special Issue welcomes research and case studies in areas including, but not limited to: AI-driven structural optimization (size, shape, and topology) applied to the building sector Generative, parametric, and automatic design approaches for single and multi-objective engineering problems Data-driven models for structural analysis and performance prediction through accurate surrogate models and Neural networks Enhanced version of well-known metaheuristic algorithms (Evolutionary, Physics-based, Swarm-based and Bio or Nature-inspired) and Hybrid optimization process empowered by ML techniques (Supervised, Unsupervised and reinforcement learning) devoted to improve computation cost and accuracy performance of complex engineering problems Integration of LCA and LCC within AI-based frameworks Eco-design and circular construction through recycling and reusing Optimization processes applied to Intelligent metamaterials, porous and lattice structures AI-supported modular, adaptive, and energy-efficient structural systems Automation and intelligent decision-support tools for sustainable design Guest editors: Prof. Raffaele Cucuzza Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy Prof. Konstantinos Daniel Tsavdaridis City St George’s, University of London, London, United Kingdom Prof. Majid Movahedi Rad Széchenyi István University, Gyor, Hungary Assistant Professor.
