Special Issue on Advancing laser-based manufacturing in e-mobility
Submission Date: 2025-01-19

The imminent transition to electrification in mobility poses several changes in the manufacturing processes. Lasers have been adopted in this transition as flexible digital tools for forming and assembly processes. Several novel components in electric vehicles, such as electric drives, battery systems, fuel-cells, make use of laser beams. Moreover, the use of lasers in body-in-white manufacturing is also increasing with new vehicle designs. Meanwhile, laser systems are evolving towards an ever-increased flexibility with beam shaping in time and space. employing new wavelengths. Additionally, integrated monitoring systems are being coupled with advanced simulation tools. The use of lasers in the e-mobility field pose several opportunities and challenges where industry and academia are often advancing together in a unique manner. In the past few years, the research has advanced very rapidly from process conceptualization to industrial production with several mature examples. This special issue arrives at this period in time to highlight the advances in the field of laser-based manufacturing for electric mobility. The works in this special issue are invited from the contributions at the LaserEMobility Workshop 2024, held in Garching, Germany, between 17 and 18 July 2024 as well as from the extended network of the LaserEMobility community. The special issue is open to submissions beyond those presented at the Workshop. The submissions will address application-oriented topics over the whole field of laser material processing for electromobility, including but not limited to: Battery cell and system manufacturing Processing of new battery materials and technologies Electric drivetrain manufacturing Fuel cell manufacturing Lightweight construction Process monitoring and control Digitalization and data-driven process optimization Guest editors: Executive Guest EditorAssociate Professor Ali Gökhan DemirOrganization*: Politecnico di Milano, Milan, ItalyInstitutional Email Address*: aligokhan.demir@polimi.itAreas of Expertise*: Laser material processing; Laser welding; Laser micromachining; Additive manufacturing Special issue information: For any inquiries about the special issue, please contact Executive Guest Editor Dr. Ali Gökhan Demir via aligokhan.demir@polimi.it.
