Scope ACM Journal on Autonomous Transportation Systems aims to cover the topics in design, analysis, and control of autonomous transportation systems. The area of autonomous transportation systems is at a critical point where issues related to data, models, computation, and scale are increasingly important. Similarly, multiple disciplines including computer science, electrical engineering, civil engineering, etc., are approaching these problems with a significant growth in research activity. This area raises novel challenges for improving traffic operations, road safety, sustainability, and efficient road traffic and vehicle management in passenger and goods delivery. Indeed, the lives of people who travel along roads on a regular basis are directly affected by traffic management and safety. Such problems require communication cooperation on the road, including car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure. Further, unmanned aerial systems are also of interest. Efficient control and management decisions for transportation systems require interdisciplinary research across areas in communications and networking, control systems, machine learning, traffic engineering and transportation systems. The expected topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Data Science in Autonomous Transportation Systems Communication and Real-Time Control in connected transportation systems Smart traffic analysis, management, and control solutions Public transit planning and operation Cooperation, Decentralization in IoVs and UAVs Algorithm Design for Autonomous Transportation Systems Mathematical Modelling of Traffic Flow Computation in Transportation Networks Algorithms for Urban and Inter-city Logistics Systems

Special Issue on Applications-Driven UAV Routing and Scheduling Algorithms for Autonomous Transportation SystemsSubmission Date: 2024-10-15Guest Editors: ⚫ Francesco Betti Sorbelli (francesco.bettisorbelli@unipg.it), Assistant Professor, University of Perugia, Italy ⚫ Punyasha Chatterjee (punyasha.chatterjee@gmail.com), Associate Professor, Jadavpur University, India ⚫ Christian Claudel (christian.claudel@utexas.edu), Associate Professor, UT-Austin, USA ⚫ Federico Corò (federico.coro@unipd.it), Assistant Professor, University of Padua, Italy Drones, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), have transformed into versatile tools with applications across agriculture, environmental monitoring, delivery, and surveillance, revolutionizing operations through real-time data collection and efficient task execution in diverse industries. However, challenges impede their optimal performance. Limited energy capacity restricts operational time, especially in extended or remote missions. Additionally, operating beyond the visual line of sight (BVLoS) introduces safety, regulatory, and communication concerns, emphasizing the need for reliable control and communication over extended distances, particularly in applications like long-distance inspections and search and rescue missions. To overcome these challenges, ongoing research and investigation are essential to unlock the full capabilities of UAVs. Notably, the development of sophisticated scheduling and routing algorithms in autonomous transportation systems plays a crucial role. These innovations aim to make UAVs as indispensable tools, ultimately enhancing efficiency and productivity across various sectors. This Special Issue focuses on a critical aspect of drone technology—developing effective routing and scheduling algorithms for autonomous transportation systems. These algorithms serve as strategic planners, determining how drones seamlessly integrate into various practical applications. The primary goal is to collect cutting-edge research that advances algorithm design and explores real-world implementations, establishing a robust theoretical foundation for UAV operations. Authors are encouraged to contribute insights, experiences, and groundbreaking advancements, enriching the knowledge that propels UAV research in autonomous transportation systems. This Special Issue also welcomes selected and extended contributions from papers accepted at both the IEEE Wi-DroIT 2024 workshop (https://widroit2024.github.io), and the IEEE ASDRoNet 2024 LCN special track (https://asdronet2024.github.io), subject to a peer-review process.
