Special Issue on 20th Sensors & their Applications Conference co-located with 5th International Conference of Fibre Optic and Photonic Sensors for Industrial and Safety Applications (OFSIS)
Submission Date: 2024-11-30

Sensors are ubiquitous today. Whether in our homes or stores, in our cars, in the aeroplanes that we travel in or most evidently in our smartphones – they are an increasingly important presence in our modern world. Sensors and sensor systems underpin the Internet of Things (IoT) which focuses on configuration, control and networking via the Internet of devices or ‘Things’ that are traditionally not associated with the Internet. The excellent measurements that modern sensor systems provide enable us not only to observe the world around us, but (at least in part) to control our environment and without high quality measurement tools, we cannot create the control systems we need – we require good measurement for the control systems that are built to exploit the advanced sensor systems developed. The field is global and worth an estimated $200 billion annually – and more when both software and hardware aspects of the field are considered. ‘Smart sensors’ are an increasing share of that market and with the development of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools, will continue to develop and to offer more to the user and the consumer. This Conference builds on the heritage of the successful series of ‘Sensors & their Applications’ Conferences, first held in 1983 and reflects the changing landscape since then. It is organized by the Institute of Measurement & Control (InstMC), with the support of the Institute of Physics (IoP), the China Instrument & Control Society (CIS), the Optical Fibre Sensors Committee (OFSC) of China Optical Engineering Society, and incorporating the 5th International Conference for Fibre-optic and Photonic Sensors for Industrial and Safety Applications (OFSIS). The Conference aims to bring both researchers and instrument developers and users together from across the world to discuss the latest developments in and directions for the field. Special Issue on Sensors in Smart Agriculture Systems and Food 4.0
Submission Date: 2025-01-31

In the realm of smart agriculture systems and the emergence of Food 4.0, sensors play a pivotal role in revolutionizing traditional farming practices. These sensors, ranging from soil moisture detectors to drones equipped with multispectral cameras, provide real-time data crucial for decision-makingprocesses. By continuously monitoring various environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and soil nutrient levels, farmers can optimize resource allocation, enhance crop yield, and minimize environmental impact. Moreover, the integration of IoT (Internet of Things) technology enables seamless connectivity between sensors, farm equipment, and data management platforms, facilitating efficient automation and remote monitoring. This synergy of sensors and digital technologies not only streamlines agricultural operations but also promotes sustainability and resilience in food production systems. As smart agriculture continues to evolve under the umbrella of Food 4.0, the role of sensors will undoubtedly remain instrumental in shaping the future of farming towards greater efficiency, productivity, and sustainability. In the domain of smart agriculture systems and the advent of Food 4.0, while sensors offer a plethora of benefits, they also pose several challenges that need to be addressed for seamless integration and operation. One significant challenge lies in the interoperability and standardization of sensor technologies. With numerous sensor manufacturers utilizing different protocols and data formats, ensuring compatibility and seamless data exchange between devices can be complex. Additionally, the sheer volume of data generated by sensors presents challenges in terms of storage, processing, and analysis. Farmers need robust data management systems capable of handling large datasets in real-time and extracting actionable insights. Moreover, sensor deployment and maintenance require technical expertise, which may be lacking in traditional farming communities. Overcoming these challenges will be crucial in harnessing the full potential of sensors in smart agriculture systems and advancing towards a sustainable and resilient food production paradigm.
