Each issue of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (J-SAC) is devoted to a specific technical topic and thus provides to J-SAC readers a collection of up-to-date papers on that topic. These issues are valuable to the research community and become valuable references. The technical topics covered by J-SAC issues span the entire field of communications and networking. J-SAC publishes only papers that are submitted in response to a Call-for-Papers. These calls are published in J-SAC issues and other publications of the IEEE Communications Society as appropriate to the subject area of the call. Papers submitted for review for possible publication in a J-SAC issue must be submitted to one of the Guest Editors listed in the Call-for-Papers.

Recent issue themes included:

    Speech and Image Coding.
    Medical Communications.
    HDTV and Digital Video Communications.
    B-ISDN Applications and Economics.
    Wireless Personal Communications.
    Advances in Satellite Communication.
    Fading Channels and Equalization.
    Spread Spectrum.

Special Issue on Localisation, Communication and Networking with VLC
截稿日期: 2017-02-01

In recent years, there has been a significantly increased global attention on Visible Light Communications (VLC). Tremendous efforts have been invested in improving the performance of VLC, focusing on devices, components, transceivers, systems and networks, achieving in excess of multi-Gbits/s targets. Hence, VLC becomes especially promising as a new member in the small-cell family of the 5G Heterogeneous Networks (HetNet) landscape, facilitating new mobile applications for entertainment, education, manufacturing, collaborative design and Internet of Things (IoT) etc. Importantly, the simultaneous exploitation of illumination and communication using VLC also contributes towards the all-important green agenda, which is one of the salient topics in the 21th century. By considering VLC within the holistic tele-ecosystem, significant revenues will be generated for satisfying the ever-growing social and economical demands at a sustainable way. Despite that VLC offers numerous benets, there are still lots of challenges ahead, such as its limited coverage, its heavy dependence on Line-of-Sight and its mobility robustness, etc. Hence, the community looks for real innovations that are fundamental to VLC, rather than being directly lifted from the known radio communications. This special issue is on Localisation, Communication and Networking with VLC, where the three aspects are purposely selected to reflect the main thrusts of VLC. To elaborate, the research of VLC relies on multi-faceted investigations ranging from the design of optoelectronics to the understanding of communications and signal processing techniques, from the development of networking protocols to the exploitation of system optimisation. The aim of this special issue is to inspire multi-disciplinary international communities to work together in order to achieve further hitherto elusive scientic advances. High quality papers will be solicited in the following non-exclusive list of main areas of research: - Measurement, Modelling and Simulation - Localisation, Positioning and Tracking - Modulation and Coding; Equalisation and Detection or VLC systems - Optical CDMA, Optical OFDM and Optical MIMO for VLC systems - Illumination and Communication Co-design for VLC systems - Access, Scheduling and Interference Mitigation for VLC networks - Resource, Admission and Mobility Management for VLC networks - Back-hauling, Duplexing, Protocol, Architecture and Security for VLC networks - Heterogeneous VLC, Self-organised VLC and Software-dened VLC - Under-water VLC, Inter-chip VLC and Board-board VLC - Camera/Laser/Organic-LED based VLC

Special Issue on Emerging Technologies in Software-driven Communication
截稿日期: 2017-04-01

Computer networks fundamentally changed the way we communicate and interact with each other. In fact, they now form the backbone of our modern societies. While early networks were merely a mechanism for exchanging data between end-hosts, current computer and telecommunication networks are way more than that. Compared to the early days of the networking not only the hardware of networks has changed fundamentally, but with it also the software deployed to control and manage these networks. To reduce the significant management cost of large networks, automated management, including autonomic computing and communications evolved. In addition, one fairly recent trend with strong impact on the network architecture was the emergence of cloud computing, with the promise of inherent scalability, availability, and better resource utilization. This led to a centralization of (virtual) network functions in data centers with clear cost benefits, but at the same time introducing new limitations. To address these limitations, some intelligence of the control plane is being shifted from the inner network nodes and data centers to the edge of the network, which is then referred to as edge or fog computing. At the same time, the network control logic moved from lower into higher layers, i.e., from hardware into software.
