Special Issue on Multimedia Analysis for Medical Applications
Submission Date: 2017-03-15

The advances in computing techniques, data acquisition technology, hardware, and networks have mutually promoted the development of multimedia analysis approaches. Many machine learning, signal/image processing, and data mining algorithms have been successfully developed for multimedia analysis. Recently, as an emerging topic in the multimedia domain, medical data analysis attracts much attention because of the increase of imaging modalities. For instance, the pathologic regions of an Alzheimer's disease patient can be discovered by jointly using different imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and computed tomography (CT). However, the extensive existence of heterogeneous data makes the medical data analysis a very challenge task, due t- the different statistical properties of these data. Also, since gathering medical data is much easier than ever before, existing multimedia learning methods are expected t- embrace new challenges t- deal with large-scale medical data that may share totally different data distribution or may continuously change over time. This special issue serves as a forum for researchers all over the world t- discuss their works and recent advances in multimedia learning methods for various medical applications, which includes medical image representation, segmentation, classification, retrieval and others. The special issue seeks for the original contribution of works that addresses the challenges of medical data. Papers addressing interesting real-world applications are especially encouraged. The list of possible topics includes, but not limited to: 1.Medical Image Representation - Data acquisition - 2D/3D Image representation - Image registration and calibration - 2D/3D Image reconstruction 2.Medical Image Understanding - Image denoising and enhancement - Landmark/structure detection - Segmentation/labeling - Visualization and visual synthesis 3.Disease Diagnostic Assistance - Disease recognition, classification and retrieval - Large scale 3D data indexing - Computer- aided diagnostic systems - Surgical and interventional systems
